Well, as an
indicator as to the quality of this film, check out that cast
list again ... George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Quentin
Tarantino? No disrespect to the man, he's a fantastic
director and writer, but I've seen less wooden actors playing the
trees in Sherwood Forest.
This film isn't
about good actors though, it's about fun, guns, gangsters and
vampires. A strange mix you must admit, but one that seems to
work on some level. Whatever you may say about this film, it'll
provoke a reaction from everybody at some point. I've seen people
recoil in disgust, some jump with horror, some have a smile on
their face all the way through and one person was physically
unable to keep still after the "twist" occured.
Basically, this is a bad film, but one you'll all enjoy.
Ideally viewed after at least four units of alcohol, this is the definitive film that you should leave your brain at the door for. No matter how hard you look at it, there is no real, deep meaning to this film, no proper symbolism or sub-plot of any kind. Two armed criminals are on the run from the police, they take some hostages, get over the border into Mexico, stop off at a bar, and are attacked by a horde of Aztec vampires, nothing you haven't seen before (just not necessarily in the same film). Confusing for some, amusing for the others, the storyline looks like it was written on the back of a beer mat late at night. Credit must go to Tarantino and Kurtzman for developing such scrawled rubbish into a successful Hollywood blockbuster. | ![]() |
The best reasons
to watch this film soberly are: (1) To watch you mate's faces as
they react to the twist and (2) To watch the actors obviously
having a great time breaking away from their typecast roles and
laying waste with some imaginative weapons. Personally, I can't
see anyone watching this film before midnight, or remembering
much about it the next day, but it's definitely worth a look for
a 'boy's night in'.
Summary: Great fun. If you want escapism, you know where to come. Nowhere else will you see such enjoyable chaos on-screen. Not the classiest of films, but extremely enjoyable.
